Can you foil and emboss at the same time?

Can magnesium dies be used for molds?

Yes, magnesium is used in model making, candy, casting, and automotive molds just to name a few of the many possible applications.

Can magnesium be used for heat sealing?

Yes a 1/4 inch die etched to .100th+ can be used to heat seal.

How deep can you etch magnesium?

Magnesium can be etched any depth +/- .002th and can be etched all the way through the die.

What is the largest die OWOSSO can etch?

The image area of the die can be: Magnesium: 16 gauge is 29″x79″, 11pt. is 29″x119″ and 1/4″ is 29″x119″, Copper: 16 gauge is 17 1/2×23 1/2 inch, and 1/4″ is 20″x26″.

Can you control the shoulder on the die?

Yes, OWOSSO can control the slope from the top of the die to bottom of the etch.

Can you fabric emboss with a magnesium die?

Yes, a 1/4 inch magnesium die will emboss fabric. However you will need the proper backing to hold the emboss.

When foil stamping, certain areas of foil are not sticking?

There may be something on surface of die that is preventing the foil from sticking. Try cleaning the die with a fine steel wool or an acetone.

What is “right” reading and “wrong” reading?

A “normal” die is wrong reading so when you stamp or print the finished piece is right reading. On a die that is right reading, you can read the die but when you stamp or print, the image is wrong reading.

When should Teflon be used?

Teflon is used on thermal kiss-cut dies to keep the die from sticking and to stop vinyl from building up on the shoulder of the die. It can also be used on debossing dies and rubber stamp masters.

Can you emboss at different levels?

Yes, by using a brass sculptured die you can achieve different levels of embossing.

What type of die do I need for leather debossing?

It depends on what type of press is being used. Most Howard or Kwik print presses use magnesium mounted and Kluge or Radio Frequency presses use unmounted dies. For all leather debossing, it is best to use 1/4″ or 3/8″ magnesium.

Can you foil stamp on leather?

Yes, however you should talk to a foil representative to get the appropriate type of foil.

How to protect your Magnesium Dies?

Magnesium dies can last indefinitely when stored properly. Most any soap or detergent can be used to clean the dies, as long as all of the chemicals are removed from the die and the die is dry when stored. The number one goal is to remove or reduce oxygen to the die as it contains moisture which will start the oxidizing process. A light coating of a food grade oil (i.e. Pam) will aid in the protection of the magnesium dies, along with packaging them in a re-sealable bag. Another option is to place a Silica Gel packet or cube in a re-sealable bag along with the die. Silica Gel desiccant is a highly porous silicon dioxide, it binds water molecules and draws it away from any material.
